Food Safety Tips for the Summer!

The summer is a time for fun in the sun, barbecues, and delicious food! But it’s important to keep our food safe to eat. Here are some easy tips to help you enjoy a tasty and safe holiday!
1. Keep it Clean
- Wash Your Hands: Before you cook or eat, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This helps get rid of germs!
- Clean Surfaces: Make sure all surfaces, like tables and cutting boards, are clean. You can use soap and water or disinfecting wipes.
2. Keep Food at the Right Temperature
- Coolers Are Your Friends: If you’re going to a picnic, pack your food in a cooler. Keep perishable foods (like meat, dairy, and salads) cold. The cooler should be at 40°F (4°C) or below.
- Hot Foods Stay Hot: If you’re grilling, make sure your hot foods are kept hot at 140°F (60°C) or above. Use a food thermometer to check!
3. Separate Raw and Cooked Foods
- Avoid Cross-Contamination: Don’t let raw meat touch other foods. Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meat and ready-to-eat foods like salads and bread.
4. Cook Food Thoroughly
- Check the Temperature: Make sure meat is cooked to the right temperature. Here are some guidelines:
- Chicken: 165°F (74°C)
- Ground beef: 160°F (71°C)
- Pork: 145°F (63°C)
- Use a Food Thermometer: This tool helps you check if your food is cooked properly.
5. Be Careful with Leftovers
- Store Leftovers Quickly: Put any leftover food in the refrigerator within 2 hours after cooking. If it’s hot outside (over 90°F/32°C), do this within 1 hour.
- Eat or Toss: Leftovers should be eaten within 3-4 days. If you’re not sure, it’s safer to throw it out.
6. Enjoy Responsibly!
- Watch for Allergens: Be careful if you or someone you know has food allergies. Always check the ingredients!
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if it’s hot outside.
Choking Hazards:
Small Foods. Make sure food is physically safe to consume. Watch out for choking hazards like small foods, especially for younger kids. Be careful with items like:
- Whole grapes
- Nuts
- Popcorn
- Hard candies
- Hot dogs (cut into small pieces)
Make it smaller. Always cut food into small, manageable pieces for younger children. Encourage them to chew carefully and not to rush when eating.
By following these food safety tips, you can enjoy a delicious summer and 4th of July with family and friends. Stay safe!
